Blog 5. Ostional River Bridge: Connecting Communities, Boosting Tourism
January 17, 2025, marked a momentous occasion for Guanacaste, Costa Rica: the grand opening of the long-awaited bridge spanning the Ostional River. This vital infrastructure project significantly enhances transportation and connectivity for the entire region.
Located on Route 160 in Santa Cruz de Guanacaste, the newly operational Ostional Bridge dramatically improves accessibility for local residents and visitors alike.
Progress updates from August 2024 detailed the construction, including the completion of the bridge's foundations and ongoing work on the approach roads. Crucially, these approaches incorporate a large stormwater drainage system, featuring four 1.8-meter diameter pipes (as confirmed by CONAVI's Road and Bridge Construction Department), to mitigate the area's susceptibility to flooding. The bridge itself spans 36.5 meters and boasts a 4.2-meter wide lane, easily accommodating heavy trucks and buses.
This achievement is the result of a successful inter-institutional partnership between the Santa Cruz Municipality and CONAVI. CONAVI contributed the bridge structure and supporting piles (valued at ¢204 million), while the Municipality oversaw the construction. The Ministry and CONAVI also collaborated on the design, inspection, and supervision.
The benefits of the Ostional River bridge are substantial:
Tourism Boost: Improved access to the stunning beaches of Nosara and Ostional promises to invigorate tourism. This is particularly important for Ostional's renowned turtle nesting season, which coincides with the rainy season. The bridge ensures reliable access year-round, allowing visitors to witness this natural wonder regardless of weather.
Enhanced Connectivity: Local communities will no longer be isolated by seasonal flooding. The bridge provides consistent access to workplaces, schools, and essential services, promoting stability and security.
This collaborative project underscores the commitment to improving Guanacaste's infrastructure and the well-being of its residents. The Ostional River bridge is more than just a crossing; it symbolizes progress, opportunity, and a brighter future for Guanacaste, fostering economic growth, tourism development, and a more connected and resilient community.
